I lead by example through observing, listening, and taking a curious and empathetic approach to coaching and feedback.

Mentorship

  • Understanding goals (craft, career, personal)

  • Regular opportunities for connecting

  • Gathering perspectives from others and sharing/discussing

  • Learn new approaches and SHARE!

Team building

  • Consistent team collaboration time

  • Team social time (trust built over time will always win over strategy)

  • Safe and level space for critique and feedback

Culture

  • More challenging as teams/org expands- but important to hold onto

  • Keep the FULL product team connected through activities and work sessions

  • Mid-sprint reviews (change for engineers to see WIP and provide feedback)

Continued learning

As part of a leadership course I took earlier this year led by Alison Gretz, we watched Kim Scott’s Radical Candor TedTalk. It hit me to my core (in a good way) and I have re-watched it many times and continue to work to implement it in my practice. Providing feedback, guidance, and coaching in a way that is empathetic but still critical is a challenge, but one well worth taking up in an effort to be a more caring, nuturing, and decisive leader.
